It’s not always easy to find the right words. Sometimes we sit with a blank screen before us, even when we write for a living.
But some tricks make it easier.
Start with a few questions.
– Who do you want to reach?
– What do you want them to know?
– What do they want to know?
It helps to have a clear picture of your audience.
Our readers are people, so give them a human face. Think about their age and where they live. What do they do? What are their interests and aspirations?
In 𝗚𝗲𝘁 𝗜𝘁 𝗪𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗲, we teach you to create ‘personas’ to personalise your audience.
Is it 54-year-old Dave, who’s worked in accounts for 20 years, is separated from his wife and juggling his work with the needs of his kids?
Is it 22-year-old Rosheen, who recently came to Australia, lives in short-term, shared accommodation, and is struggling to find a job with English as a second language?
Or are you writing for the executive team in your corporate headquarters? What do they need to know?
When you’re ready to write, use the reverse pyramid model.
The reverse pyramid model is an old journalism tool that works across most communications.
In essence, it means don’t bury the lead!
Include the most critical information first: who, what, where, why, when and how.
Less important detail comes next with helpful facts and supporting information in order of importance.
Then (if appropriate) give your piece a sexy heading to catch the reader’s eye and end with a call to action.
These are just a couple of tools we teach in 𝗚𝗲𝘁 𝗜𝘁 𝗪𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗲.
